Description

Januvia is an oral prescription-based antidiabetic medication for Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It contains an FDA-approved active ingredient called Sitagliptin, which helps lower blood glucose levels. The medication belongs to the drug class known as Dipeptidyl Peptidase-4 (DPP-4) Inhibitors. MSD Pharmaceuticals Ltd manufactures the product.
Sitagliptin blocks the DPP-4 enzyme, which increases and prolongs the action of incretin hormones. This increases insulin after meals and reduces liver glucose production, helping lower and stabilize blood sugar levels. It can be prescribed alone or with other Diabetes medications.
Some common side effects of this medicine are headache, stuffy or runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat. If combined with insulin or sulfonylureas, Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) can become a risk factor. Alcohol affects the blood glucose level, increasing the chances of getting Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) or Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar levels). Other significant interactions include diseases like renal (kidney) and liver dysfunction, heart failure, and pancreatitis.

The dosage depends on your condition and the doctor's recommendations. Patients should take it with or without food at a fixed time daily for best results. If a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered unless it is almost time for the next dose. Patients should not double up on the dosage. In case of overdose, patients should consult a doctor immediately, as it may increase the risk of side effects.

What are the benefits of taking Januvia?
Januvia provides several benefits for patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus:
  •     It helps decrease and stabilize blood sugar levels in adults with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, especially when diet and exercise alone are insufficient
  •     It controls blood sugar levels, which results in a decreased chance of getting Diabetes-related complications such as kidney damage, nerve problems, vision loss, and cardiovascular disease.
  •     It blocks the DPP-4 enzyme, increasing incretin hormones that boost insulin release after meals and reduce the liver's glucose production.
How to take Januvia
It is a prescription-based antidiabetic medication that should be taken per the doctor's instructions. Here are some general guidelines for this medication:
  •     Take the dose at a scheduled time daily as directed by your doctor.
  •     Swallow the tablet as a whole with water. Do not chew or crush it.
  •     You can take it with or without food.
  •     Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly.
What are the side effects of Januvia
Most side effects of Januvia subside in due time and will not require medical attention. However, consult a doctor if the symptoms continue or worsen:
  •     Headache
  •     Sneezing
  •     Sore throat
  •     Stuffy or runny nose
  •     Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels)
  •     Stomach ache
Safety advice
Liver disease
Limited studies have shown that patients with liver disease can safely use Januvia. However, to take precautions, consult a doctor for the dose requirement.

Kidney impairment
For patients with kidney impairment, doctors should assess their kidney function before starting the treatment with Januvia, as they may require dose adjustment.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women
Januvia (Sitagliptin) is not generally recommended during pregnancy, as limited information is available about whether it affects the fetus. Consult a doctor to weigh in on the potential benefits and the possible risks. Similarly, breastfeeding women should consult a doctor for any treatment with this medicine.

Avoid
Avoid taking the medication if you are allergic to Sitagliptin. Alcohol can affect blood glucose levels, causing either Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar level) or Hyperglycemia (high blood sugar level), depending on how much one consumes. Similarly, the change in blood sugar levels will affect driving.
